The YMCA of Western North Carolina operates multiple summer camp locations within Buncombe and McDowell counties.
These day camps allow the children of Western North Carolina to spend their summer in a safe, healthy, and enriching environment.
Being a Summer Camp Counselor is an opportunity to be a part of critical youth development and provides counselors an opportunity to learn and develop themselves.
YMCA Summer Camp operates from 6/12/2024 - 8/18/2024, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Shifts are 10 hours a day, up to 40 hours a week.
Staff training begins at the end of May 2024.
Retention bonuses up to $400 are available to counselors that meet the requirements.
Summer Camp Counselors may also have the opportunity to continue employment with the YMCA when summer camp ends as an Afterschool Counselor.

ABOUT THE ROLE As a Summer Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for daily supervising 10 to 19 summer camp program participants within grades K-8.
The responsibilities include assisting in the planning, developing, and implementing activities in the summer camp program.
You will guide the academic and social development of children by ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment using a variety of resources provided by the Program Coordinator to introduce new skills throughout the execution of activities.
To accomplish this, staff are required to participate in weekly professional development and planning sessions.
You must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Ensures the safety and engagement of all children in their assigned group.
• Provides assistance with homework and encourages academic progress.
• Follows program lesson plans and implementation plans in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting all participants' individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs.
• Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches to youth's academic and social development.
• Facilitates a programming environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
• Maintains ongoing communication with supervisor.
• Maintains accurate classroom records as assigned and in accordance with program requirements.
• Communicates appropriately with parents and attends designated parent/family events.
• Adheres to all required policies of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the state, and federal regulations.
ABOUT YOU Qualifications • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
• Experience creating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment, and arts.
• Some prior experience working with children under 13 years of age is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Exceptional group management, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Must possess oral, auditory, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with children and adults.
• Must be capable of implementing an after-school site's daily administrative, program-related, and supervisory responsibilities.
• Flexibility with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
